CULTIVATING STRONG CHARACTER: THE POWER OF GODLY FRIENDSHIPS

Week of 6/2/2017 entry from Bible Promises for You Men’s Group: Blessings

Scripture: Psalm 1:1-2

Blessed is the man who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked, Nor stand in the way of sinners, nor sit in company with scoffers.  Rather, the law of the Lord is his joy; and on his law he meditates day and night.

Thought:  Surround yourself with the Holy Spirit and fellow believers, live a life Jesus would be proud of and bear fruit (disciples).

Application:  Friends define your character. don't say you love Jesus and live by a bad moral code… live it out!

Response:  Search me Father and make known to me what friendships matter.  How can I be a better friend and build friendships from the ground up using you as a cornerstone.

Looking back Today (2025):  Living by a good moral code requires a lot of discipline to ensure consistent behavior.  When we fail, because we all do, it is the strong friendships that encourage us to take two steps forward, after taking one backwards.  It’s important to be that friend for someone else!

  1. Totally agree on importance of friends that keep me accountable.
I love the verse and thought of meditating in God’s law and finding joy in it

    1. Accountability to our friends and accountability to ourselves. I all too often regret the words I choose and see when I should have "exited" a conversation or a situation. When I have more frequent conversations like this it is easier to see in the moment. I believe that when you are living with the Spirit, you hear Him more often.

  2. Not only do we need to be careful who we surround ourselves with we also need to make sure we are the ones not being wicked. Do not bring your friends down because you have something to prove or you are having a bad day.

    1. ... and apologize to others when they are the recipient of your bad day. The apology can take a bad situation and make a friendship stronger. There is something about the vulnerability of acknowledging your faults that allows others to empathize because we all fail each other. Pride has to be pushed aside when we know we are wrong, regardless of how uncomfortable it may feel.

  3. Who surround ourselves with is so important. If we focus on our friendships that allow us to grow closer to God, we are being helpful of each other.

    1. This made me think about the saying "All I really need to know I learned in kindergarten." I Iike to Google the origin of phrases and learned this was a book. I just purchased it for $7.15 on Thriftbooks.com and am interested to read it an see how it aligns with the simple message of loving those around you. Life is supposed to be simple, but we make it hard at times.

  4. There is a lot here and it stopped me in my tracks yesterday. As I kept refocusing on the words IRON SHARPENS IRON and it became my call to action to reach out to a friend who does not have faith and keep the conversation going. I've felt for a long time like this is someone that I've been asked to bring to faith and I stopped at 80%... time to give more. I've reached out... thank you for helping give me the initiative and courage to reach out and help SHARPEN IRON.

'Iron is sharpened by iron; one person sharpens another.'
